The Debate: Wellness and the Bottom Line

The recession has undoubtedly reduced spa revenues. Should we re-examine our offerings at spas and market toward the health conscious consumer? Would guests prefer a focus upon health rather than opulence and luxury? Would both guests and spas benefit from preventive health care measures? Is indulgence politically incorrect? In this time of economic slowdown does pampering appear excessive?

Recently some hotel and resort chains have packaged fitness of body and mind, healthful food and beverage offerings and spa to attract new market share. This concept is reminiscent of the 1980's and early 1990's when designers planned spas to embrace holistic health practices.

From the 1940's to the present, the raison d'etre of destination spas such as Canyon Ranch, Rancho La Puerta and Golden Door was/is prevention of lifestyle induced disease and promotion of high quality of life. A century ago, New York state spas thrived with their focus upon health and relaxation. Is the time ripe for the return of health spas?

In answer to these questions, we will hear predictions from financial experts, ideas from marketing mavens and most important, the value of health centered vacations and treatments, whether for one hour or two seeks. Might we achieve added value for the consumer and increase spa revenues?

Come, share and contribute to our conversations!
